Install on Wix
Add the TalkingDot messenger to a Wix site with Wix's Custom Code setting. You paste your snippet once and it loads on every page. There's no Wix app to install.
Before you start: copy your snippet from Settings → Install in your TalkingDot dashboard. It contains your workspace key and looks like this:
<script src="https://talkingdot.com/widget.js" data-key="YOUR_WORKSPACE_KEY" async></script>Wix requirements
Wix only lets you add custom code to a site that is published and has a connected domain. Connecting your own domain requires a Wix Premium (paid) plan, so free sites on a wixsite.com address can't use Custom Code. Wix's requirements can change, so check the Wix Help Center article "Embedding Custom Code on Your Site" for the current rules.
On a free Wix plan? You can still offer chat by linking to your hosted chat page, https://talkingdot.com/chat/YOUR_WORKSPACE_KEY. Add it to a button or menu item, for example "Chat with us", and it opens a full-page messenger.
Add the snippet
- Open your site's dashboard in Wix and go to Settings.
- Find Custom Code. It's in the Development & integrations section (called Advanced in some dashboards). Click Custom Code.
- Click + Add Custom Code at the top right.
- Paste your snippet into the code box and give it a name you'll recognise, such as "TalkingDot messenger".
- Under Add Code to Pages, choose All pages. When Wix asks whether to load the code once per visit or on each page, choose once per visit. The messenger stays loaded as visitors move between pages and follows page changes by itself.
- Under Place Code in, choose Body - end.
- Click Apply. If the messenger doesn't show on your live site a minute later, publish the site again.
Wix's labels move from time to time. If a label doesn't match what you see, look for the Custom Code option under your site's Settings.
Showing it on some pages only
Choose Choose specific pages instead of All pages in step 5 and pick the pages you want. Alternatively, keep it on all pages and use the show/hide page rules in Settings → Messenger in TalkingDot. Then you can change where it appears without going back into Wix.
Verify it works
- Open your published site on its connected domain in a private window. Test on the live site, because custom code may not run inside the Wix Editor or preview.
- Look for the launcher bubble in the bottom-right corner, or on whichever side you chose in Settings → Messenger.
- Send a test message. It appears in your TalkingDot Inbox, and Settings → Install shows when the messenger was last seen on your site.
Troubleshooting
- Custom Code is greyed out or missing: the site isn't published, has no connected domain, or isn't on a Premium plan. See Wix requirements.
- Nothing appears on the live site: check the code is set to All pages and Body - end, and that the snippet was pasted in full, including
</script>. - Domain allow-list: if you set one in Settings → Security, add your connected domain. The messenger stays hidden on domains that aren't listed.
- Invalid key: the browser console shows
TalkingDot: missing or invalid data-key. Copy the snippet again from Settings → Install. - Two chat bubbles: if you previously used Wix Chat or another chat app, turn it off so visitors see only one launcher.
Next steps
- Office hours & away mode: show when you'll be back.
- Chatbots: collect a visitor's email before handing them to your team.
- Proactive messages: greet visitors on key pages.
- Help center: let visitors find answers inside the messenger.
